By the mid-19th century, it was no longer possible to bury people in church buildings or cathedrals.
In 1862 Ely Cathedral bought 46 grave plots in the new Ely cemetery. These burials provide a time capsule of information about those connected to the Cathedral for over a century, not just the Dean and Clergy but Vergers, Choristers, local tradesmen as well as their families and servants.
Mary Stevens is a highly respected Ely Cathedral and City guide as she sets about revealing some of these stories.
