Mud, Sweat and Engineers: the making of the modern fens with Alice Whitehead and Yaye Tang

Wednesday 21st October 2026, 19:30-20:45
Zoom
This talk will explore how the draining of the fens shaped the lives of local people in the seventeenth century.

Beginning with a brief history of fenland drainage, including the creation of the Bedford Levels Corporation, and their mission to drain the fens, followed by focussing on the local fen community. How did drainage change people’s way of life? How did local people respond to the new, alien landscape? How did people resist and rebel against the work of the powerful BLC?

Alice Whitehead and Yaye Tang are archives assistants of Cambridgeshire Archives.  They deal with enquiries and undertake research on all manner of subjects concerning the history of Cambridgeshire.  They hope to bring alive the history of the fens and demonstrate the value of drainage records to genealogical research.
